Costa Rica's first woman president. The Chinchilla: "Equality and dialogue"
SAN JOSE '- For the first time, a woman was elected to the leadership of the Costa Rica Vice President in the outgoing government of Oscar Arias (Nobel Peace Prize in 1987), Laura Chinchilla, 50-years old political scientist, has managed to outperform the competition, gaining almost double (47 percent) of the votes of his closest rivals: Otton Solis, the candidate of the center-left, who lost the presidential election by a whisker in 2006 and has stood at 24 percent, and Otto Gyuevara, the right-wing Libertarian Movement, at 21 percent.
"It 'a moment of joy but also of humility, the people gave me his trust and not betray," Chinchilla said, before about 5,000 cheering supporters gathered in a hotel in San Jose. Social training, the Chinchilla has called for dialogue with his political opponents and the different social sectors, and has promised to continue the policies of his predecessor Arias: improving the quality of health, education, and ensure the safety ' Gender Equality.
